Promptchan (promptchan.com — its .ai domain doesn’t resolve, so link to the .com carefully) is an Ireland-based AI image and video generator claiming over 500,000 users and more than 20 million community-shared images and videos since its 2023 launch. It’s built specifically around adult content generation rather than treating NSFW as an unlock bolted onto a general-purpose image tool.

What it generates

Promptchan supports text-to-image and image-to-image generation across several style presets, Realistic, Anime, Cinematic, Hentai, and Furry among them, with tiered model quality (commonly labeled Standard/High/Max or similar), inpainting, outpainting, seed locking, and upscaling up to 4K. Image cloning and variation tools let you iterate on a result, and generations can be kept private or shared to a public community feed. A chat-companion layer sits alongside the image tools, giving a customizable character memory and personality and generating contextual “selfies” during conversation, a genuine overlap with the companion-app category covered elsewhere on this site.

The “gems trap”

This is the detail most worth understanding before you sign up, and it’s flagged consistently across independent reviews, not just by us: Promptchan runs two separate currencies. A monthly subscription unlocks tiers and features, but doesn’t include unlimited generation, you still draw down a separate pool of “Gems” for each image, with higher-quality or more complex generations costing more gems. Buying gems separately doesn’t unlock subscription-gated features, and a subscription doesn’t come with unlimited gems. More than one reviewer has specifically labeled this “the gems trap,” and it’s the single most common criticism we found. Exact tier pricing is inconsistent across sources we checked — some list Plus/Premium/Pro at $5.99/$9.49/$13.49 monthly, others at $11.99/$18.99/$26.99 with bundled gem allotments, which itself suggests either frequent price testing or unreliable third-party reporting. Content moderation

Promptchan’s published content moderation policy is more explicit than most competitors’: it prohibits CSAM (including AI-generated), non-consensual deepfake or intimate imagery, bestiality, and extreme violence, enforced through a combination of automated screening at the point of generation, community reporting, and a human moderation team, with a stated roughly 48-hour target for removal requests and a DMCA process. It doesn’t explicitly carve out real-person or celebrity-likeness deepfakes as a distinct prohibited category outside the general non-consensual-imagery language, which is a gap worth naming.

Privacy

Promptchan’s privacy policy commits to retaining data only “for as long as necessary” for legal, accounting, or reporting purposes, without a specific timeframe, and, like SoulGen, says nothing about whether user prompts or generated images are used to train its models. It states a “right to request erasure” without describing a concrete deletion process, and the service states it’s not intended for users under 18 without describing an active verification mechanism beyond that statement.

What users report

Promptchan’s Trustpilot presence is larger and more positive than most products in this batch: the .com listing shows roughly 4 out of 5 stars across about 147 reviews, with a separate .ai listing showing around 69 reviews. Positive feedback centers on image and video quality and ease of use; negative feedback centers on bugs, unpredictable prompt-word blocking, slow support on billing and account issues, and tight video-generation limits even on the Pro tier that some reviewers feel don’t justify the price jump.

The bottom line

Promptchan is the stronger of the two NSFW image generators we reviewed on output quality and independent review volume, but the subscription-plus-gems structure means the advertised tier price understates what an active user will actually spend.
